Guwahati: The central bureau of investigation (CBI) arrested Goods & Service Tax (GST) commissioner (Appeals) along with another person on graft charges in Guwahati, Assam on Thursday.
The accused have been identified as Raju Shaktivel and another man identified as Mahavir Jain.
As per the official, the CBI received the case following a complaint against the commissioner and three middlemen from a businessman who had executed construction work related to the North East Frontier Railway and raised bills.
The Additional Commissioner of Central Goods & Service Tax (Dibrugarh) had raised a demand of service tax amounting to Rs. 48,43,034, the official added.
The complainant preferred an appeal before the Commissioner against the adjudication order.
It was further alleged that during one of the hearings of the said appeal, the Commissioner demanded bribe of Rs. 4,50,000 through middlemen, which was further negotiated to Rs. 3.83 lakh to settle the matter, officials claimed.
Following the complaint, CBI laid a trap and caught a middleman (Private Person), while accepting bribe of Rs. 3.83 lakh on behalf of said Commissioner (an IRS Officer). The Commissioner was also caught.
Searches were conducted at the premises of the accused which led to the recovery of incriminating materials.
Both the arrested accused will be produced before the Competent Court, officially added.
