Nagaland observed World Mental Health Day with the rest of the world under the slogan “Make Mental Health and Well-Being for All a Global Priority.”
The programme was held at the State Mental Health Institute in Kohima yesterday.
Senior Medical Officer SMHIK, Resource Person Dr. Viktetoulie Pienyu stated that 20% of all mental illnesses in the state are caused by substance misuse and recommended people not use alcohol or drugs to relieve stress.
He emphasised the need for people to maintain their mental health and said that a nation cannot advance if its people are psychologically ill.
According to Dr. Piennyu, the major objectives of recognising Mental Health Day are to raise awareness of the problem, mobilise support, and encourage institutions, the church, and society at large to take action.
World Mental Health Day is observed on October 10 every year. The day was first observed by World Federation for Mental Health in 1992. The objective behind observing World Mental Health Day is to raise awareness of mental health issues and to mobilise efforts in support of mental health.
