An Indian student in Australia is in the ICU after being stabbed 11 times last week in a brutal knife attack. His family alleged a hate crime.
Attacked on October 6, Shubham Garg, a 28-year-old PhD candidate at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. He is said to be critical now.
His parents had been trying to get a visa to go to Australia from their home in Agra, Uttar Pradesh.
After graduating from IIT-Madras on September 1, Shubham moved to Australia.
Australian media reports state that on October 6 at around 10.30 p.m., the man approached Shubham on the street.
He claims that the man threatened him and demanded money.
He was repeatedly stabbed by the assailant after he refused, and then he fled.
According to reports, Shubham sustained several injuries to his face, chest, and abdomen.
He was able to get to a nearby house in that condition, where he was brought to the hospital.
A 27-year-old man has been arrested and is facing attempted murder charges.
Shubham didn’t know the attacker, according to reports.
