A wild elephant’s carcass was found in a pond in Namrup in Assam’s Dibrugarh district on Thursday.
The body was found near a thermal power plant.
The jumbo is suspected to have died of electrocution.
The presence of an exposed live wire next to the carcass, according to some sources, suggests that the elephant may have come into contact with it.
Forestry officials arrived at the scene in the interim and recovered the carcass for an autopsy.
It may be mentioned that a wild elephant’s carcass was recently found in a river in Numaligarh in the Golaghat district.
Locals on the Doigrung River initially noticed the jumbo, following which they informed forest officials.
The elephant may have died after slipping into an illegally dug sand hole.
