Guwahati:As part of the drive to create a participative and inclusive deliberation process in the run-up to the Youth-20 (Y20) meeting to be held in Guwahati, a Model Y20 summit was organised in B.Borooah College here today. In a Model Y20 event, participants represent the interests of a member of the G20 nations and deliberate on the topic at hand.
The event focused on one of the theme of this year’s Y20 Summit – Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction: Making Sustainability a Way of Life. Two students from ten Colleges each participated in the model summit to represent G-20 members. A Model Y-20 Secretariat was also formed to operationalize the Model Y-20 summit. Students from Pragjyotish College, Beltola College, B.Borooah College, Pandu College, S.B. Deorah College, Guwahati College, Arya Vidyapeeth College, Handique Girls’ College, LCB College and Dispur College actively participated in the model summit.
SusmitaSarma from Guwahati College who represented Russia as a delegate said that this experience of joining the model summit has helped her to get more idea about the G20 countries and their opinions on climate change. Anita Devi from Beltola College who represented Germany said that it was a great opportunity for her as it has helped her to have more knowledge about what is happening around the world.
Students from various colleges attended the Model summit as audience and expressed their happiness for getting the opportunity to be a part of it. Ansh Kumar Sharma from LCB College, Guwahati mentioned how this event has helped him to know about the stands of different countries regarding the issues and agreements related to climate change. He also said that he is very much curious about the upcoming G20 and Y20 events to be held in Guwahati.
While talking about the initiatives by Government of Assam on upcoming G20/Y20 events, Dr. B. KalyanChakravarthy, IAS, Principal Secretary to the Government of Assam said that “as the youth of Assam have immense potential to benefit our society socially, politically, and economically, the Government of Assam is engaging them across the breadth of the state, through platforms such as the Model Y 20, Seminars etc, wherein a meaningful discourse can be generated around the thematic areas of Y20. Their cognitive prowess is being challenged with deliberations being held around issues such as the needs of the future workforce; on making sustainability a way of life; ushering an era of peace and security; deliberating their role in democratic governance; and towards a health ecosystem that addresses both physical and mental health issues, he adds. He says that these are key as the State gears up for the Y20 Inception Meeting to be held in Guwahati on 7-8 Feb 2023.”
It may be mentioned that on the sidelines of the G20 summit, the first meeting of the Y20 Group shall be held in Guwahati from 6th to 8th February, 2023. This is the first of the various meetings to be held on the five Y20 themes across India in a run-up to the final Youth-20 Summit in August 2023. More than 250 delegates from across the world are expected to participate in the 3-day event in Assam. It will focus on five themes of Future of Work; Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction; Peace Building and Reconciliation; Youth in Democracy and Health, Wellbeing and Sports.
As part of the awareness drive over 50 Universities/Colleges across the 34 districts of Assam is organizing seminars, workshops, debates and panel discussions in their campuses.
