Meanwhile, self-styled guru Asaram Bapu has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping another disciple. He was sentenced by a sessions court in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, in a 2013 rape case. He was also fined RS 50,000.

So he could not appear in the sessions court. Asaram’s daughter also failed to reach the court on time. As a result, Sessions Judge DK Soni had to wait for some time on Tuesday to pronounce the sentence.
Sessions Judge DK Soni on Monday convicted Asaram of rape. The court acquitted six people, including Asaram’s wife, due to lack of evidence. An FIR was lodged against Asaram at Chandkhera police station in Ahmedabad. According to the FIR, Asaram had raped her multiple times between 2001 and 2006. The victim lived in his ashram on the outskirts of Ahmedabad city. “Asaram has been convicted under sections 376 2(c) (rape) and 377 (unnatural offences) of the Indian Penal Code,” the public prosecutor said on Monday. He has also been found guilty of illegal detention. ’’
