Supreme Court protects MLA Akhil Gogoi from arrest in anti-CAA agitation case

New Delhi:The supreme court has given protection from arrest to Independent MLA from Sivasagar Akhil Gogoi in connection with anti-CAA protests and a case related to suspected Maoists and sought a response from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on the issue.

The MLA, who was vocal against the Central government during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, had moved the apex court against the Gauhati High Court’s February 9 order. The Supreme Court today said “As per the order passed on February 24, 2023, the state (NIA) should be given notice to the state (NIA) for the limited purpose of considering providing protection to the applicant from arrest. A bench of Justices V Ramasubramanian and Pankaj Mithal passed the order after hearing the arguments of senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi, appearing for the MLA.
