Bhopal gas tragedy: Court rejects Centre’s plea seeking more compensation for victims

New Delhi:In 1984, many people died and many people were crippled for life due to the spread of toxic methyl isocyanite gas in the factory of Union Carbide Indian Limited located in Bhopal city of Madhya Pradesh state of India. This gas accident was one of the major industrial accidents in India and the world.

According to encyclopædia Britanica, about 15,000 to 20,000 people died in the accident. In addition, about 500,000 people had to face respiratory diseases, eye diseases and other health problems due to the impact of the accident.

Recently, the Central Government of India had moved the Hon’ble Supreme Court seeking further compensation to those affected by the gas tragedy. But the Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a curative petition filed by the Centre from the US-based firm Union Carbide Corporation for enhanced compensation for those killed in the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy.
