Chennai: Five drown in water tank adjacent to temple

New Delhi: A tragic incident took place in Tamil Nadu. Chennai: Five persons drowned in a water tank adjacent to a temple in Chennai on Wednesday. The accident took place during the puja at the temple. Police and fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot as soon as the news was received. The bodies of five persons have been recovered from the water tank. Police have sent the bodies for autopsy and started investigation. The death toll may rise.

The accident took place around 10:30 am. At that time, devotees of Dharmalingeshwara temple in Nanganallur had gathered near a water tank adjacent to the temple to celebrate ‘Panguni’. According to chennai police sources,
The first person fell into the water unable to balance the body. When others jumped to save him, they also drowned in deep water. Five bodies have been recovered so far. The bodies have been sent for autopsy. It is being investigated exactly how the accident took place.

Fearing more bodies in the deep water, police and firefighters are rushing to the water and carrying out rescue operations. Tamil Nadu Rural Industries Minister T M Anbarasan visited the spot. “The tragic accident could have been avoided if the police had informed them about the specific ritual (panguni) in advance,” he said. It’s an irreparable loss.
