548 arrested, only 12 convicted! Centre to change sedition law on Supreme Court order

New Delhi: The order came earlier. The Modi government at the Centre has decided to replace the british-era sedition law with the supreme court’s order. The Centre has told the Supreme Court that it is reviewing the provisions and punishment provisions of the colonial-era sedition law.

A bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice J P Pardiwala adjourned the hearing. Earlier, Attorney General R Venkataramani, appearing for the Centre in the case, told the apex court that Section 124 of the Indian Penal Code.


The Centre has started examining various sections of the sedition law, including sections. That process is now in its final stages. ’’

Necessary changes may be made to the provisions of the colonial era, he said. The act came into force in 1870 during the British rule. At the time it was used by opponents of the British government. Those who rebelled against the government were prosecuted under this law. If a sedition case is filed against a person, he cannot apply for government jobs. Sedition is a non-bailable offence. Depending on the nature of the offence, there is a provision of three years to life imprisonment. Apart from this, there is a provision of fine.
Between 2015 and 2020, 356 cases were registered under sedition sections. 548 people were arrested and only 12 were convicted. During the hearing, the Supreme Court had directed the Central government to review the act and no case under the sedition section should be registered till it is done. As per the order, the Centre clearly conveyed its stand to the court.
