New Delhi: To deal with the situation, the central government on Friday imposed Section 355 in Manipur and took over the responsibility of maintaining law and order and security. Since then, violence has resurfaced there.

The agitation for the Scheduled Tribe identity of the Meitei people began earlier this week. Within 48 hours, Manipur had virtually become a battleground. A CRPF commando, who was on holiday at his home, was shot dead in Churachandpur late on Friday night. An Income Tax officer of the Indian Revenue Service was the victim of violence in the capital Imphal. To deal with the situation, the central government on Friday imposed Section 355 in Manipur and took over the responsibility of maintaining law and order and security. And then there’s this. The central force CRPF has directed the jawans and officers of Manipur, who are on leave on Friday, to report immediately to the nearest camp.

The All Tribal Students’ Union of Manipur (ATSUM), a Manipuri student organisation, took out a march on Wednesday to protest against the demands of the agitating Meitei community. The violence allegedly spread from there. Recently, the Gauhati High Court had directed the state government to consider granting Scheduled Tribe status to Meiteis. Soon after, tribal organisations took to the streets to protest against him. And that’s where the conflict started.
