New Delhi: Two persons were seriously injured when hot branches of bhog fell on them at Jagannath temple in Puri. The incident took place on Saturday near the Bhog pandal in the temple premises in Puri. The two bodhia sevaits of the temple (who carry mahaprasad to the Jagannath temple) carried the branches brought down from the oven on their heads. But the water suddenly slipped on the slippery road. Unable to handle the pull, the second man also fell with a pot of dal. Hot branches fall on them.
According to local media reports in Puri, the bodies of the two servitors were burnt in the incident. Arrangements were also made to shift them to the hospital in critical condition. They are still undergoing treatment at Sadar Hospital in Puri. However, in this case, once again, from the Bhog Mandap in Puri to the vigraha room of the temple.
Questions are starting to be raised about the road leading. It is alleged that the road in the temple premises is slippery almost all the time due to water. And according to the temple rules, the bodhia sevaites in charge of bringing the bhog of Lord Jagannath have to carry hot bhog pots on their heads along that dangerous path. There have been many accidents in this premises in the past. The temple authorities have not changed the rules. No arrangements have been made to keep the road safe through regular maintenance.
According to local sources, the two servitors have been identified as Pradeep Kumar Sahu and Papi Pradhan. One is a resident of Brahmagiri in Odisha. The other lives in Talajung. Rohit Das, president of the Bodbahak Sangha, an organisation of bodhia sevayats of the temple, also said, “The road in the Bhog pandal is slippery with water all day. So whenever we go down that road, we go very carefully. Especially if you have prasad on your head, you have to be more careful. But even then, sometimes there is nothing to do. Accidents happen. This has happened many times before. ’’
