300 tourists still stranded in Sikkim, cars parked on landslide-hit roads

New Delhi: Heavy rains wreak havoc in north Sikkim. Sikkim has been witnessing incessant rains for the last three days. Landslides have occurred in several areas. As a result, tourists are in danger. As of Friday, more than 2,000 tourists were stranded in north Sikkim. Many were rescued on Saturday. However, more than 300 tourists are still stranded in Sikkim.

The road to Chungthang was blocked due to landslides in Sikkim. As a result, communication with North Sikkim was virtually cut off. Surrey’s car stopped on a mountain road. The Sikkim government started the rescue operation on Saturday. Roads in Lachen and Lachung were damaged by landslides. At least in that area. As many as 238 local taxis were stranded. Efforts are on to rescue tourists by building a temporary wooden bridge.

As many as 2,100 tourists stranded in Sikkim were rescued on Saturday. Of those detained, 36 were foreigners. Besides, 60 students of a government college were also trapped in the collapse in Sikkim. The Sikkim government has arranged 23 buses and 208 small vehicles for rescue operations. The District Magistrate of Mangan district said 2,400 tourists were stranded in Lachen and Lachung due to rains and landslides. The road to Chungthang has been blocked. The rescue operation began at 11 am on Saturday. Attempts were made to rescue all the tourists within that day. But in one day, not everyone was brought down to Gangtok.

The North Sikkim district administration has opened two helpline numbers (8509822997 and 8116464265) to check on tourists.
