PhD not mandatory for appointment of professors in colleges and universities, says UGC

New Delhi: PhD is not mandatory. The UGC has set the criteria for applying for the post of Assistant Professor in colleges and universities. If you pass the National Eligibility Test (NET), State Eligibility Test (SET), examination, then you can apply for the concerned post. The University Grants Commission said.
In a tweet, the UGC said the minimum qualifying criteria for appointment as assistant professor is PhD optional from July 1, 2023. If you pass the exam like NET/SET, the concerned job seeker can apply directly for the post. The UGC has amended the 2018 regulations for the recruitment of teachers and teaching staff in colleges and universities. The university grants commission said the amendments will come into effect from July 1.


UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar has said that the minimum qualifying criteria for applying for the post of Assistant Professor is optional. Earlier, in 2021, the UGC had said that PhD is not mandatory for direct recruitment of assistant professors. Meanwhile, the National Testing Agency has started preparing the answer sheets for UGC NET 2023.
