New Delhi: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday overtook former West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu. He is now number two in the list of chief ministers who have ruled the state for the longest time in the country.
Former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling holds the record for the longest time in the chief minister’s chair. He was also appointed chief minister of Sikkim for five consecutive terms. He was in power in the state for more than 24 consecutive years from December 12, 1994 to May 27, 2019.
Naveen Patnaik, a five-time chief minister of Odisha, took charge on March 5, 2000. He has been in office for 23 years and 138 days. Jyoti Babu became the Chief Minister on June 21, 1977. He held office for 23 years and 137 days until November 5, 2000. In 2000, he voluntarily left Kursi for Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.
