New Delhi: The name of God’s own country is changing. And not Kerala, the south Indian state will be called by a new name. The Kerala Assembly on Wednesday moved a resolution to change the name of the state. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s government had moved a proposal to change the name of Kerala. But why this sudden decision?
According to the proposal put forward by Vijayan’s government, the new name of Kerala will be ‘Keralam’ from now on. A resolution requesting the Centre on the renaming has been adopted. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan moved a resolution in the state assembly to rename Kerala as ‘Keralam’. The remaining Left MLAs have agreed to the proposal. Neither the Congress nor the UDF had any opposition to the state’s renaming proposal.
Why this sudden change? Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said, “The name of the state is pronounced Keralam and not Kerala in Malayalam. The states were formed on the basis of language on November 1, 1956. There was a need to create a united Kerala for the Malayalam-speaking people of the country. This demand has been strongly raised since the time of the freedom struggle. But, in the Constitution, the name of our state was written as Kerala. As a result, Kerala has been mentioned since then. “
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced that the proposal to change the name was unanimously adopted in the Assembly. Though the state assembly passed a proposal to rename Kerala, it will not come into effect without the Centre’s consent.
