New Delhi: T Ismail of the SDPI, the political wing of the now-banned Popular Front of India (PFI), has been elected as the head of Talapathi gram panchayat in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka. Interestingly, he has been endorsed by two BJP-backed members to retain the post for the second consecutive term.

The PFI has been banned by the central government on charges of terrorist activities. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said this in Parliament. The SDPI is known as the political wing of such organizations. The saffron party is uncomfortable with the BJP’s name being associated with them. The BJP claims that there is no contest on any party symbol in this election. Although the other side countered that the political party does not fight directly, but every candidate goes to the polls with the support of one political party or the other.
