New Delhi: The number of students committing suicide in India has increased by 70 per cent between 2011 and 2021. Information in this regard has been given in a report by news website Money Control.
The assessment comes just days after Kota, the coaching centre hub, recorded the highest number of student suicides since 2015 and two Dalit students committed suicide within two months at IIT Delhi.
Data provided by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) said 13,089 students died by suicide in 2021 (the year of its latest report on suicides).
This represents a 70 per cent increase from 7,696 cases of student suicides reported in 2011. Since 2011, the number of suicides by students in India has generally increased every year.

The share of students in India’s total suicide victims has also increased. This was 8% of total suicides in 2021, which saw an increase of 2.3 percentage points over 2011.
Both the number and share of student suicides in India saw an increase in the year 2020.
The NCRB’s Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India (ADSI) report does not specifically provide details of reported causes of suicide among students, they do provide this description for age groups.
