Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister, wife jailed in corruption case

New Delhi: He is the Higher Education Minister of Tamil Nadu. It is his responsibility to show the direction to future generations. K Ponmudi was accused of financial corruption. The Madras High Court has sentenced Tamil Nadu’s Higher Education Minister and his wife to three years in jail in the case. The couple was also fined Rs 50 lakh.

This sentence is for having assets disproportionate to income. The first FIR against the couple was registered in 2002. It is alleged that between 1991 and 2001, when the AIADMK was in power, the assets of K Ponmudi and his wife increased disproportionately with their income. Both were accused of disproportionate income of Rs 1.4 crore.
