Uttarakhand becomes first state to introduce Uniform Civil Code Bill amid ‘Jai Shri Ram’ chants

New Delhi: For the first time in the country, the Uniform Civil Code Bill was introduced in the Assembly. The controversial bill was introduced in the Uttarakhand Assembly on Tuesday. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami himself introduced the bill in the Assembly. However, after the introduction of the bill, the special session of the Uttarakhand Assembly was adjourned for a long time. The session was adjourned till 2 pm.


Earlier, the Uttarakhand cabinet had approved the Uniform Civil Code Bill. Earlier, the draft of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill was sent to the five-member committee. The committee, headed by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, has made several recommendations to the bill. According to sources, the committee has recommended banning polygamy and child marriage. Also, the minimum age of marriage for girls of all religions should be kept the same. In the case of divorce, all religions must observe the same rules.

After accepting all the recommendations, the Uttarakhand cabinet on Sunday gave the green signal to the bill. If passed in a special session of the Assembly, the bill will move one step closer to becoming a law. Dhami has called a special session from Monday to Thursday. The controversial bill was introduced on the second day of the session.
