New Delhi:The Uttarakhand Uniform Civil Code bill, which was passed in the state Assembly on Tuesday, makes the registration of marriages compulsory, and failing to do so will attract a maximum fine of Rs 20,000.The bill makes it mandatory that marriage registration needs to be done within 60 days of the ceremony.
All marriages after 26 March 2010 will have to be registered in Uttarakhand within 6 months. Though the UCC makes it clear that non-registration will not lead to invalidation of the marriage in any way, it stresses that all marriages in the state need to be registered.Under the UCC, both men and women can approach the court for divorce.
