Historic day for the country! The Uniform Civil Code Bill passed by the Uttarakhand Assembly

New Delhi: Today is a historic day for the country. As the first state in India, the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly on Wednesday passed the Uniform Civil Code Bill (Uniform Code of Citizens Bill). The bill seeks to replace religious personal laws regulating marital relationships and inheritance.

Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami introduced the controversial bill in the House on Tuesday. The bill was passed today after heated discussions on the issue. Chief Minister Dhami then said in the Assembly “After Independence, the framers of the Constitution gave the right under Article 44 that states can introduce UCC at an appropriate time… We prepared the draft as per the constitutional provisions.”
