New Delhi: India is still the world’s largest importer of arms. The central government has called for ‘self-reliance’ on the project of making weapons on Indian soil to strengthen the country’s defense. However, India still has to depend on other countries for arms imports. This picture is seen even after the new tide in the arms manufacturing industry on the country’s soil.
Statistics show that between 2019 and 2023, India accounted for 9.8 per cent of the world’s total arms imports. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute released a new report on Monday. India’s arms imports increased by 4.7 per cent between 2014 and 2018 and 2019 to 2023. Stockholm International Arms Supply.
The report of the International Peace Research Institute has come up with many statistics. As it turns out, India’s largest arms supply is usually from Russia. India’s confrontation with China over the past few years has led to the country’s defence strengthening. In the last few years, apart from Russia, India has relied on France, Israel and the US for arms imports. Russia is the main supplier of arms to India. 36% of the country’s weapons are imported from Russia. However, India’s dependence on weapons from Russia has been gradually decreasing. When it comes to military hardware and software, India relies more on domestic suppliers or Western countries than on Russia.
In 2014-18 and 2019-23, arms imports from Russia accounted for 34 percent. Then there is France with 33 percent. America is in third place. Of this, 13 percent of the arms are imported from India. France and the United States are going to supply more weapons to India.
