New Delhi: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was officially sworn in as a Union Cabinet minister today. Sonwal, who served as Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways in the outgoing Lok Sabha, will continue his significant role in the Cabinet as an elected MP from Dibrugarh .
He contested the elections as a Gana Parishad candidate and defeated former Union Minister Pawan Singh Ghatwaar in Dibrugarh. He later joined the BJP in 2011 and was re-elected to the Lok Sabha from Lakhimpur in 2014. He was a student leader since 1992 and eventually served as the Chief Minister of the state from 2016 to 2021.His extensive experience and leadership in both State and Union roles is his contribution to the Union Cabinet.
