Om Birla elected Speaker of the Lok Sabha for a second term by a voice vote

New Delhi: Three-time BJP MP Om Birla was elected Speaker of the Lok Sabha for the second time on June Birla was elected chairman for the second term after defeating India Block candidate K Suresh by vice vote. Birla, 61, was elected from Rajasthan quota for three terms and is contesting for the fourth time in the history of the Lok Sabha after 1952, 1967 and Om Birla began his political career as a student leader and served three consecutive terms in the Rajasthan Assembly from 2003 to Birla won his first Lok Sabha election in 2014 and was re-elected in 2019.

Over the years, he played a significant role in the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Birla defeated Congress’ Prahlad Gunjal by nearly 42,000 votes. Birla’s last tenure saw an improvement in the efficiency of the Lok Sabha. Parliament passed laws like the Women’s Protection Bill and repealed Article 370 from Kashmir amid the ravages of COVID-1 Congratulating Birla, Modi said “I want to congratulate you on behalf of the House. It is a huge responsibility for you to hold this post for the second time during Amrit Kal. We hope you will guide us for the next 5 years. Your sweet smile will keep the entire House happy.’Rahul Gandhi said the Opposition-led India Block wanted to help Om Birla in his work and wanted the House to “work better. It is critical that the voice of the Opposition be allowed to be represented in this House.”
