Thousands gather at Bijuli Bhavan to protest against the Assam government’s prepaid smart meters, citing skyrocketing electricity bills and financial burdens on citizens.

Guwahati: In a significant demonstration, the United Opposition Forum – Assam, comprising 18 political parties, mobilized thousands of supporters today in front of Bijuli Bhavan, the headquarters of the Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd (APDCL). Notable political figures, including MPs, MLAs, and opposition leaders such as Debabrata Saikia, Lurinjyoti Gogoi, and Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, participated in the rally, raising concerns about the recent introduction of prepaid smart meters across the state.

Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah highlighted the overwhelming impact these smart meters have had on consumers, claiming that many residents have seen their electricity bills double almost overnight. He accused the state government of implementing a scheme that disproportionately affects ordinary citizens, describing it as a strategy to “extort money” from the populace already facing economic hardships.

“The rollout of prepaid smart meters stands as one of the most pressing issues facing Assam today,” Borah stated during the protest. He criticized the government for adding financial pressure to a community that is already struggling, calling for immediate action to address the grievances of the affected residents.

Participants echoed Borah’s sentiments, demanding a reevaluation of the smart meter program and calling for transparency in billing practices. The protest underscored the growing discontent among citizens regarding rising costs of living and the perceived failure of the government to address their concerns. As the demonstration concluded, the opposition vowed to continue their fight against what they view as unjust policies affecting the welfare of Assam’s residents.
