In a historic achievement, Mushfiqur Rahim surpasses Tamim Iqbal to become Bangladesh’s highest run-scorer in international cricket during the first Test against India. This article explores his remarkable journey and the ongoing match highlights.

Dhaka: Chennai witnessed a significant milestone in Bangladesh cricket as Mushfiqur Rahim eclipsed Tamim Iqbal’s record to become the nation’s all-time highest run-scorer in international cricket. This achievement occurred during the first Test match against India at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, where Rahim scored 13 runs before being dismissed by Ravichandran Ashwin on Day Three.

With a career total of 15,205 runs across all formats, Rahim now leads the charts for Bangladesh, boasting an impressive tally that includes 20 centuries and 82 half-centuries from 464 matches. Prior to this, Tamim Iqbal held the record with 15,192 runs amassed in 387 games, featuring 25 hundreds and 94 fifties. Shakib Al Hasan, another veteran of the team, stands third with 14,701 runs in 446 matches, along with 14 centuries and 100 fifties.

As the match unfolds, Shakib is currently at the crease with six runs to his name, alongside captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who is batting at 51. The Bangladeshi side is chasing an imposing target of 515 runs to clinch victory. In their first innings, Bangladesh struggled against India’s bowling attack, managing to score only 149 runs. Jasprit Bumrah was the standout performer, taking four wickets for just 50 runs.

The day began with fireworks from India’s batting lineup. Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill both scored double centuries, propelling India to declare their second innings at 287 for 4. Gill, who was dismissed for a duck in the first innings, bounced back impressively to score 119 not out, hitting 10 fours and four sixes. Pant, making his comeback in Test cricket, scored 109 runs, showcasing a measured approach before shifting gears to unleash a flurry of aggressive shots.

The partnership between Pant and Gill was particularly devastating for the Bangladeshi bowlers, as they combined for a 167-run stand for the fourth wicket. The Indian team, led by captain Rohit Sharma, looked to capitalize on their momentum, with Pant reaching his century in 124 balls. His sixth Test century ties him with M.S. Dhoni for the most centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper in the longer format.

After reaching his hundred, Pant continued to play aggressively but fell soon after, attempting a catch off Mehidy Hasan’s bowling. Gill, however, remained composed and capitalized on the Bangladeshi bowlers’ inconsistencies, achieving his third Test century in just 161 balls. K.L. Rahul contributed with a quick 21 not out, but it was Rohit’s decision to declare the innings that shifted the focus back to Bangladesh.

At the end of Day Three, Bangladesh resumed their innings at 158 for 4 after poor light ended play early. They find themselves still trailing by 357 runs, facing a daunting task to achieve the target set by India.

Rahim’s historic milestone adds a notable chapter to his already illustrious career, underscoring his importance to the Bangladeshi team. As the match progresses, all eyes will be on how the team responds to this challenging situation and whether they can rally to achieve an unlikely victory. With the likes of Shakib and Rahim in the lineup, the potential for a dramatic comeback remains alive, keeping fans on the edge of their seats as the series unfolds.
