A sophisticated cyber fraud targeting industrialist SP Oswal highlights the growing threat of digital scams, as two suspects are arrested in connection with a ₹7 crore theft involving fake CBI officers and a staged Supreme Court hearing.

Guwahati:In a shocking case from Guwahati, Assam, two individuals were arrested for orchestrating an elaborate scam that defrauded renowned textile industrialist SP Oswal of ₹7 crore. The perpetrators, posing as Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials, executed a meticulously planned fraud that included a fake online Supreme Court hearing and fabricated arrest warrants. The fraud came to light when Oswal filed a complaint with the Ludhiana police on August 31. Investigators quickly apprehended the two suspects, while a further seven members of the gang remain at large, with law enforcement agencies pursuing leads across Assam, West Bengal, and Delhi.Using digital tactics, the scammers intimidated Oswal with fictitious arrest warrants from the Enforcement Directorate and presented a forged Supreme Court order demanding the transfer of funds to a non-existent “Secret Supervision Account.” To enhance the believability of their claims, they even staged a phony online court session featuring someone impersonating Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. A fake court order was subsequently sent to Oswal via WhatsApp.Despite losing a substantial sum, authorities managed to recover ₹5.25 crore, marking the largest recovery in India related to this type of cyber fraud. This incident underscores the urgent need for increased vigilance and enhanced cybersecurity measures to safeguard individuals from the rising tide of sophisticated digital scams, particularly those targeting high-profile figures in society.
