Guwahati:On September 29, a tragic incident unfolded near Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam, where a biker was fatally attacked by a rhinoceros. The victim, Saddam Hussain, 37, hailing from Sonapur Kachutali in the Kamrup (Metro) district, was riding his motorcycle from Mayong to Chamata when the rhino charged at him near Haduk Bridge.
Local forest officials reported that the animal had strayed from the confines of the sanctuary, prompting an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding its escape. Nayan Jyoti Das, the Forest Range Officer at Pobitora, confirmed the fatality and noted the ongoing inquiry to understand the factors that contributed to this dangerous encounter.
This tragic event has heightened concerns regarding human-wildlife conflicts in the region, particularly as it follows a series of animal attacks across India. Just two days prior, on September 27, a spate of attacks in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, left four individuals injured, including three children. These incidents included a leopard attacking a 13-year-old girl and a 35-year-old man near Katarniaghat, along with suspected wolf attacks in the area. Katarniaghat Divisional Forest Officer Shiv Shankar confirmed the leopard incident, assuring that the victims are currently receiving medical attention.
As investigations continue, authorities are urged to implement measures that balance wildlife conservation with public safety, seeking to mitigate the risks posed by such interactions in the future. The increasing frequency of these incidents underscores the need for greater awareness and protective strategies for both wildlife and local communities.
