Guwahati:As Wildlife Week kicks off from October 2 to 8, 2024, Assam is taking the opportunity to celebrate its diverse wildlife, focusing on the critically endangered Pygmy Hog. This remarkable creature, known as the world’s smallest wild suid, is endemic to Assam and now inhabits only the Manas National Park and Tiger Reserve.

With a mere population of around 100 individuals left in the wild, the Pygmy Hog’s survival is closely tied to the preservation of tall, wet grasslands—vital ecosystems that are quickly vanishing due to habitat destruction. Agricultural expansion and livestock grazing are among the major threats to its existence.

Once thought to be extinct, the Pygmy Hog was rediscovered in Assam in 1971. Its classification as an endangered species, listed under Schedule I, highlights the pressing need for conservation initiatives.

During this Wildlife Week, the Government of Assam urges the community to unite in efforts to protect the Pygmy Hog and its critical habitats. The slogan, “Biodiversity thrives where grasslands stand,” serves as a powerful reminder of the essential balance needed to preserve Assam’s natural heritage.
