GUWAHATI: In a proactive move to bolster disaster response in its flood-prone regions, the Assam Government has proposed a new policy requiring Class I officers and employees to be proficient in swimming. This initiative was brought up during the 51st State Executive Meeting, led by Chief Secretary Dr. Ravi Kota, and aims to enhance risk management strategies in a state frequently affected by severe flooding.Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reportedly approved this initiative, underscoring the importance of life-saving skills in the workforce. The proposal includes a provision to reimburse training costs up to Rs. 10,000, encouraging officers to acquire swimming skills. This decision responds to the ongoing threat of flooding in Assam, where over 40 percent of the land is vulnerable to damage. The Brahmaputra Valley alone encompasses a massive flood-prone area of 3.2 million hectares, highlighting the urgent need for improved preparedness in the face of annual flood challenges.
