New Delhi : In a significant cultural recognition, the Union Cabinet has officially designated five additional languages as “classical,” including Assamese, as announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday. This decision highlights Prime Minister Modi’s commitment to promoting Indian languages.The newly recognized languages—Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese, and Bengali—join six others previously acknowledged as classical: Tamil, Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Odia.Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, expressed heartfelt gratitude for this landmark decision, stating on social media, “On behalf of the people of Assam, I thank Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the entire Union Cabinet for granting Assamese the status of a Classical Language.”On October 1, Sarma had indicated that the state government was actively engaging with Modi and the Central government to secure this status for Assamese, emphasizing its cultural significance. He noted that the proposal would exceed the initial recommendations from the Committee led by Justice Biplab Sharma and voiced optimism that the Prime Minister would support this initiative.Union Home Minister also congratulates people of Assam.
