India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar criticizes the United Nations for its inadequate response to modern global challenges, urging for a more proactive approach in international affairs during a recent address.
New Delhi: In a candid address at the Kautilya Economic Conclave in Delhi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed concerns about the United Nations’ effectiveness in addressing contemporary global crises. He likened the UN to an “old company,” suggesting that while it retains a role in international diplomacy, it struggles to keep pace with evolving global challenges.
Jaishankar highlighted the UN’s shortcomings in responding to urgent issues such as the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as the global response to the Covid-19 pandemic. He stated, “The United Nations is like an old company, not entirely keeping up with the market, but occupying the space,” underlining that while the UN is central to multilateral diplomacy, its impact is diminishing.
The minister pointed out that in the absence of decisive UN action, countries often resort to unilateral measures. He criticized the UN’s performance during the Covid-19 crisis, noting that nations acted independently or formed coalitions like COVAX to address the pandemic, largely sidelining the UN.
As he examined current geopolitical tensions, Jaishankar remarked on the organization’s diminishing role, suggesting that the UN has become a “bystander” in significant global conflicts. His remarks reflect a growing sentiment among world leaders regarding the need for the UN to adapt and engage more actively in the shifting landscape of international relations and conflict resolution.
