Kolkata:A tragic explosion at a coal mine in Birbhum district, West Bengal, has resulted in the deaths of at least seven workers and critical injuries to several others. The incident occurred around 10:30 AM on Monday at the Gangaramchak Mining Private Limited colliery, situated in the Lokpur area, during routine coal-crushing operations.

Reports indicate that the explosion took place while detonators were being transported for scheduled blasts at the mine. Local police confirmed that rescue operations are ongoing, with three bodies already recovered from the site.

Local BJP MLA Anup Saha, who visited the area, expressed grave concern over the incident, noting that it seems explosives were unloaded from a truck without adhering to essential safety protocols. The explosion reportedly occurred in the mine’s dump yard, raising serious questions about the handling of hazardous materials.

P B Salim, the Chairman and Managing Director of the West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited (WBPDCL), stated that the deceased workers were employed by a contractor responsible for the mine’s operations. He emphasized that an investigation is underway to ascertain the cause of the explosion, and assured that efforts are being made to support the affected workers and ensure site safety.

The WBPDCL, a government-owned entity, operates multiple power plants and plays a crucial role in the state’s energy supply. However, this incident has cast a dark cloud over its operations, sparking demands for stricter safety regulations in industrial environments.

Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation to identify any lapses in safety measures and prevent future tragedies, reigniting critical discussions surrounding industrial safety standards and the risks faced by workers in hazardous settings.
