Over the past 48 hours, Gauhati Medical College has reported a significant increase in accident-related admissions during the Puja festivities, with a focus on young adults. Authorities urge caution amidst the celebrations.

Guwahati: In a troubling development, Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has seen a dramatic rise in accident cases, reporting 120 admissions in just 48 hours during the peak of Puja celebrations. Dr. Abhijit Sharma, the superintendent of GMCH, shared that these incidents occurred mainly during the Navami and Dashami days.

Of the reported cases, 59 accidents happened within the city of Guwahati, while the remaining 61 were from surrounding areas. The statistics reveal that the majority of those injured—112 men and 8 women—fall within the 20 to 40 age range, with 81 cases reported in this demographic. Dr. Sharma highlighted the alarming trend, stating, “The 20 to 40 age group is disproportionately affected, raising concerns during festive times.”

Currently, 24 individuals are receiving treatment for various injuries sustained in the accidents. Thankfully, no severe injuries have been reported; however, there was one unfortunate fatality, with the deceased person being brought to the hospital. The cause of death is under investigation, pending a post-mortem.

Dr. Sharma urged the public to exercise caution during the festivities, emphasizing that the increase in accidents serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by heavy traffic and celebratory activities on the roads.
