Youth Arrested in Goalpara for Obscene Remarks Against Women and Goddess Durga

Guwahati:In a troubling incident that has stirred significant outrage in Goalpara, Assam, Abdul Kashem Ali has been arrested for allegedly posting an obscene video aimed at Goddess Durga and women devotees during the recent idol immersion ceremony.

The arrest followed a strong community reaction, with around 300 individuals gathering to protest outside the Mornai police station, demanding immediate action against Ali. The incident occurred shortly after thousands of devotees participated in the peaceful immersion of Goddess Durga idols, a time usually marked by reverence and unity.

The controversy erupted when a video surfaced on social media, showing Ali making derogatory remarks about Goddess Durga and women attending the visarjan. The video quickly went viral, drawing widespread condemnation and leading concerned citizens to file a First Information Report (FIR) at the Mornai police station.

Despite initial frustrations over the lack of immediate action, the situation escalated as protesters called for justice. In response, police, with local assistance, located and arrested Ali at his residence. Following his arrest, community members expressed their concerns, highlighting that the video’s content was not only disrespectful to the deity but also deeply offensive to women, heightening communal tensions.

Authorities have urged the public to maintain peace and avoid escalating conflicts while assuring that the matter will be handled with seriousness. Police reiterated their commitment to ensuring justice and preventing such incidents in the future, emphasizing the importance of maintaining communal harmony in the region.
