Assam’s Khadi Sector Thrives, Creating Jobs and Driving Economic Growth

The Khadi industry in Assam has achieved remarkable sales and job creation, significantly boosting the local economy while empowering small entrepreneurs from SC and ST communities.

Guwahati: In a significant boost to Assam’s economy, the Khadi industry has reported impressive sales of Rs 18.92 crore and created over 5,000 jobs over the past year. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the state’s commitment to empowering small businesses, which play a crucial role in driving economic development.The Khadi sector, known for its traditional textile production, is receiving strong support from the state government. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to promote entrepreneurship, especially among marginalized communities. More than 7,600 small entrepreneurs from Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) have benefitted from the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), aimed at fostering economic upliftment and creating sustainable livelihoods.Financial backing under the PMEGP has been substantial, with a total margin money allocation of ₹111.16 crore, of which ₹64.06 crore has been utilized to assist 2,417 micro-enterprises. This support is estimated to have generated approximately 19,336 new job opportunities, further underscoring the program’s impact on the local economy.From FY 2018-19 to FY 2023-24, a total of 2,417 projects have received support through the PMEGP. As of March 31, 2024, a total of 7,216 SC/ST small entrepreneurs in Assam have benefited from various government schemes, enhancing their capacity to thrive in the market.With these initiatives, Assam is paving the way for sustainable economic growth, ensuring that its small businesses not only survive but thrive, creating a positive ripple effect throughout the community.
