Guwahati:A significant police operation in Sivasagar has unveiled a thwarted kidnapping plot targeting senior ONGC officials. The Sivasagar Superintendent of Police, Subhrajyoti Bora, revealed that the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) had been scheming to abduct at least two high-ranking officials since May 2024. The plan was set for execution on October 6 at an ONGC rig in Bokota.Key to the plot was ONGC assistant engineer Tahirul Hussain, who allegedly supplied critical information regarding the officials’ activities. Following detailed investigations, authorities arrested several individuals, including Rahul Hazarika, known as “Laden,” and Irshad Latif, alias Mithu. Interrogations indicated that the abduction was meticulously planned, with a specific timeframe of 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm on the day of the attempted kidnapping. On October 5, Hazarika established a temporary base at Hussain’s residence to coordinate the operation. The following day, he and four ULFA operatives drove from the Assam-Nagaland border to patrol National Highway 37, waiting for the opportune moment to strike. However, the police preemptively raided the residences of Hussain and Latif, uncovering critical evidence related to the plot.During an attempted transfer of Hazarika for further questioning, he sustained a leg injury and has been taken to Dibrugarh Medical College for treatment. Meanwhile, Hussain remains at large, and law enforcement is actively pursuing him. A formal case has been registered at Nemuguri police station as the investigation continues to explore additional connections and suspects involved in this alarming scheme.
