In a surprising shift, AIUDF leader Badruddin Ajmal announced that his party will contest just the Samaguri seat in the upcoming Assam by-elections, scheduled for November 13, despite initial plans to contest three constituencies.

Guwahati: Badruddin Ajmal, chief of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), declared on Thursday that his party will focus its efforts solely on the Samaguri Assembly constituency in the forthcoming by-elections for five seats in Assam. Ajmal had previously stated intentions to contest three seats but has now opted for a single contest. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Ajmal faced a significant defeat, losing to Congress candidate Rakibul Hussain by over 10 lakh votes. Hussain has held the Samaguri seat since 2001, and this time his son, Tanjil Hussain, is expected to represent Congress.Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is keen to unseat Congress in Samaguri. Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah expressed confidence in the BJP’s prospects, stating that the constituency’s voters are ready for a change after years of Congress governance. He dismissed recent reports of scuffles between party supporters, attributing them to internal disputes within Congress.State BJP chief Bhabesh Kalita reinforced the party’s ambitions, asserting that they aim to win all five contested seats, capitalizing on their recent Lok Sabha success and the vacancies created by MLAs moving to the Parliament.
