Starting October 23, commercial vehicle owners in Mizoram will launch an indefinite strike in response to recent fuel price hikes, demanding government action to reduce costs.
Guwahati:Mizoram is bracing for an indefinite strike by commercial vehicle owners set to commence on October 23, 2024, following a recent increase in fuel prices. The state government raised petrol prices from ₹93.93 to ₹99.24 per litre and diesel from ₹82.62 to ₹88.02 per litre as of September 1.Despite efforts by Chief Minister Lalduhoma to reach a compromise, the state cabinet has decided to uphold the new rates. On October 17, representatives from 11 vehicle owners’ associations met and unanimously agreed to proceed with the strike, indicating significant discontent within the industry.The Mizoram government has justified the price hikes as necessary for funding social infrastructure and road maintenance projects. However, the Mizoram Commercial Vehicle Union contends that these increases place an excessive financial burden on the public, especially as many continue to recover from the economic fallout of the pandemic.The upcoming strike is anticipated to cause considerable disruptions in transportation services statewide, as vehicle owners rally for a reconsideration of the fuel prices.
