A BJP MLA has lodged a complaint with the Chief Election Commissioner against Congress MP Rakibul Hussain over his controversial remarks about beef consumption, claiming they have incited communal tensions during the ongoing bypolls in Assam.

Guwahati: Assam: In a developing political controversy, Jitu Goswami, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Barhampur, has formally complained to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) against Congress MP Rakibul Hussain. The complaint centers on allegations that Hussain made inflammatory remarks regarding “eating of beef,” which Goswami asserts have heightened communal tensions in the region amid the ongoing campaign for upcoming bypolls.Hussain is campaigning for his son, Tanzil, who is vying for the Samaguri assembly seat—a position previously held by the MP for 23 years before he vacated it to serve in the Lok Sabha. According to Goswami’s complaint, Hussain’s repeated provocative statements violate the Model Code of Conduct and could incite discord among local communities. In his complaint, Goswami stated, “His statements regarding ‘eating of beef’ have been reported during various campaign meetings and media interactions, significantly disturbing communal harmony in our community.” He highlighted that these comments have circulated widely through news channels and social media, intensifying tensions. Goswami provided evidence to support his claims and urged the CEC to take immediate action against Hussain. In response to the accusations, Hussain conducted a press conference at his Samaguri residence, defending his statements. He alleged that beef was served at a BJP-organized meeting in the 13th Mile area on October 23, which purportedly led to infighting among BJP members. “The BJP, which vocally opposes cow slaughter, has reached this level to secure electoral victory,” he remarked.Hussain expressed his willingness to cooperate with the Election Commission and invited the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to investigate his claims. “While we don’t share ideological similarities with the RSS, we respect their principles. I will resign from public life if I am proven wrong,” he declared.
