Guwahati: The Assam government has launched a robust initiative to address illegal housing developments on tea garden land under its Mission Bashundhara 3 program. This initiative is designed to regularize land occupancy and protect the interests of indigenous communities who have lived on these lands before December 31, 2022.The foundation of these new regulations is based on the report from the Justice (Retd.) Biplab Sharma Commission, which advocates a zero-tolerance approach to unauthorized construction in tea plantation areas. According to the new rules, any new buildings constructed on tea garden land will now be classified as a criminal offense, highlighting the government’s commitment to preserving these essential agricultural regions.To assist eligible residents, the government will offer a one-time relief option for those living on tea garden land prior to the specified date. These individuals will have the chance to legally acquire the land by paying a nominal premium of 10%. Notably, this provision does not apply to members of the tea plantation community building homes on their own property, ensuring that local residents are not negatively impacted by the new regulations.
