Margherita Hosts Celebratory Convention for Tai Ahom Community

The annual Poi Fhuralung Mung Dung Sung Kham convention in Margherita brought together the Tai Ahom community to celebrate their culture, recognize achievements, and discuss initiatives for preserving their heritage.

Guwahati:Margherita district recently celebrated the annual Poi Fhuralung Mung Dung Sung Kham convention, a key religious gathering for the Tai Ahom community, held at Seng Ren in Ulup Longaon. This two-day event focused on honoring and preserving the rich traditions of the Tai Ahom people while fostering a sense of community pride.The convention kicked off with the ceremonial flag hoisting by Kanak Hatibaruah, president of the Margherita district committee. Following this, Thanu Gogoi, the association’s general secretary, performed a traditional “maidam tarpan,” a ritual offering that holds significant cultural importance.Participants from various parts of Assam came together to engage in specialized training on Ban Mio Mulung, a crucial cultural practice for the Tai Ahoms. After the sacred Fhuralung Puja ceremony at Chengren, an open session was conducted under the leadership of Rubul Phukan.During this session, several individuals were honored for completing cultural training: 11 participants received Te Sat Molong certificates, 13 were awarded Pang Ma, and 50 others earned Malung certificates, reflecting the community’s dedication to cultural preservation.The gathering also featured insightful discussions on strategies to promote and safeguard Tai Ahom culture. Key figures in attendance included Mintu Deodhai Phukan, Chief Advisor of the Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad, Nabojit Baruah from the Tai Ahom Development Council, along with prominent local social workers like Gopal Baruah, Manoj Phukan, and Rupam Gogoi.The convention not only celebrated the community’s religious practices but also underscored the commitment to protect and sustain the Tai Ahom cultural heritage in Assam.
