Amid protests against tree-cutting plans for a flyover at Dighalipukhuri, singer Zubeen Garg vows to defend the environment and lead a movement if the government proceeds with the proposal.

Guwahati: In a passionate display of environmental advocacy, renowned singer and actor Zubeen Garg has voiced his strong opposition to government plans to cut down trees around Dighalipukhuri to make way for a new flyover. Standing with local residents and environmental activists, Garg urged officials to rethink their proposal, emphasizing the importance of preserving the area’s natural beauty.Garg posed a critical question: “If the government removes all the trees around Dighalipukhuri, can they truly restore its natural beauty?” He stressed that sacrificing greenery for development is unacceptable, regardless of the political party in power. “This isn’t about BJP or Congress; it’s about safeguarding what we cherish,” he stated, warning that progress should not come at the cost of vital green spaces.Addressing government leaders directly, including the Chief Minister and Prime Minister, Garg issued a stern warning. “Every year, we plant 5,000 trees, far exceeding the government’s efforts. I challenge them—if they proceed with this plan, I will lead a revolution. I am dedicated to protecting our trees and will not back down.” He asserted that if authorities continue with their plans, “they can cut me down too.”Reflecting on his decade-long commitment to environmental causes, Garg declared, “In the last ten years, I’ve planted more trees than the government has managed.” He highlighted Assam’s wealth of natural resources—trees, rivers, and fertile land—that deserve preservation rather than destruction. “Engage with me; I don’t just protest—I stand for what truly matters. If the government ignores our concerns, I will lead a revolution.”
