Protests in Kokrajhar escalate as the Koch Rajbongshi community demands immediate peace negotiations and the establishment of a separate Kamtapur state, threatening further unrest if their calls go unanswered.

Guwahati:On November 4, hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Kokrajhar, advocating for urgent peace talks with leaders of the banned Kamtapur Liberation Organization (KLO) and calling for the establishment of a separate Kamtapur state for the Koch Rajbongshi community. The demonstration, organized by the Kamtapur State Demand Committee (KSDC), began at the Kokrajhar Government Higher Secondary Multipurpose School and concluded at the District Commissioner’s office, where a memorandum was submitted to the Prime Minister and President of India.KSDC President Lakhindra Ray emphasized the longstanding nature of their demands, stating, “We have been calling for a separate Kamtapur state for years. The government has not taken any substantial steps toward reaching a peace agreement with KLO Chairman Jibon Singh.”The protesters also reiterated their demand for Scheduled Tribe status for the Koch Rajbongshi community, a matter that remains unresolved. Ray warned that if the government does not take action, protests will escalate across Assam, West Bengal, and Bihar.
