Tragic Almora Bus Plunge Claims 36 Lives, Government Announces Compensation

A devastating bus accident in Almora, Uttarakhand, has resulted in 36 fatalities and 19 injuries. The government has pledged significant financial aid to victims’ families and initiated an inquiry into the incident.

New Delhi: At least 36 people have tragically lost their lives and 19 others sustained injuries after a bus plunged into a deep gorge in Almora district, Uttarakhand, on November 4. The bus, which was transporting over 40 passengers from Nainidanda in Pauri district to Ramnagar in Nainital, lost control in the Salt area near Marchula.Emergency teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local police, were quickly deployed to conduct rescue operations. Almora’s Superintendent of Police, Devendra Pincha, warned that the death toll may rise as efforts continue. Preliminary investigations suggest that overloading might have played a role in the tragedy.The incident was reported to authorities around 9 a.m. by passengers who had been thrown from the bus during the fall. The scale of this disaster has captured national attention, prompting responses from both the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand.Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his condolences and announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh for each deceased’s family and Rs 50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund. Following suit, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami offered an additional Rs 4 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh for those injured. Dhami also ordered a magisterial inquiry into the accident and suspended the area’s Assistant Regional Transport Officer (Enforcement) to investigate potential administrative oversights.
