In Samaguri, Nagaon, vehicles of two Congress MLAs and NSUI national president were damaged amid bypoll-related violence. The police are investigating the incident, which has sparked political tensions.
Guwahati: Violence broke out in Samaguri, Nagaon district, on Tuesday night as several vehicles carrying two Assam Congress MLAs and NSUI national president Varun Choudhary were damaged during an election-related incident. The vehicles, which were being used by Barpeta MLA Abdur Rahim Ahmed, Golakganj MLA Abdus Sobahan Ali Sarkar, and Choudhary, were targeted while the leaders were addressing a public gathering in Puthikhaiti village after inaugurating a new election office.According to Rupjyoti Dutta, the Kaliabor Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), the attack occurred while the leaders were not inside their vehicles. A case has been filed by Congress workers, alleging that BJP supporters were behind the attack. The police have seized the damaged vehicles and are investigating the matter. Dutta confirmed that the situation is now under control.Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain, the former Samaguri MLA, visited the scene and demanded swift police action to apprehend the perpetrators. He urged Nagaon SP Swapnanil Deka to take immediate measures to prevent any further unrest and warned that Congress workers might resort to self-defense if the situation isn’t addressed.This incident follows earlier violence in Samaguri, where suspected Congress supporters attacked and injured two BJP workers. Tensions between Congress and BJP supporters in the area have been rising, particularly since the bypoll schedule was announced.The bypolls, scheduled for November 13, will fill vacant seats in the Dholai, Sidli, Bongaigaon, Behali, and Samaguri constituencies. In Samaguri, Congress has fielded Tanzil Hussain, son of Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain, to contest against BJP’s Diplu Ranjan Sarma.
