Tensions rise in Tinsukia after clashes between protesters and police over the demand for tribal status for the Moran and Motok communities. Allegations of excessive force against police officer Shankar Das lead to an ultimatum for disciplinary action.
Guwahati:Tensions escalated in Tinsukia as protesters clashed with police during a demonstration demanding the recognition of the Moran-Motok community as a Scheduled Tribe. Led by the All Moran Students’ Union and the All Assam Motok Youth Students’ Federation, the initially peaceful protest turned violent after security forces intervened.Authorities deployed tear gas to disperse the crowds, allegedly to prevent the symbolic burning of effigies, a key element of the protest. The use of force has led to widespread anger, with student unions accusing Tinsukia Sadar Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Shankar Das, of acting excessively. The protest groups have issued a 24-hour ultimatum for immediate disciplinary action against Das, threatening to launch a district-wide bandh (shutdown) in Tinsukia on November 10 if their demands are not met. The student unions, representing significant sections of the Moran and Motok communities, argue that their right to peaceful demonstration was violated during the police crackdown. The situation has sparked a tense standoff, with local authorities under increasing pressure to address the grievances of the protesting groups.
