Guwahati: A violent incident marred a BJP rally in Samaguri, Assam, on November 9, when unidentified assailants opened fire on participants of the march, injuring several people and escalating tensions in the region ahead of the upcoming elections. The rally, which was traveling from Magurmari to Latani and attended by Barhampur MLA Jitu Goswami and BJP leader Suresh Borah, was thrown into chaos when gunfire erupted. The shooting led to injuries among the rally participants, with some needing urgent medical attention. Local authorities have launched an investigation to determine the identity of the attackers and prevent further violence. In a statement, MLA Jitu Goswami recounted the incident, describing how the peaceful march was disrupted when individuals from the residence of Ismail Hussain, a former Congress councillor, began throwing stones at the participants. The situation quickly escalated, leading to gunfire. Goswami’s vehicle was targeted, though he was unharmed due to the quick action of his personal security officer (PSO). “I have urged the police to take swift action and apprehend the culprits,” Goswami said, adding that one of his colleagues was in critical condition and may require transfer to Gauhati Medical College for treatment. The incident has sparked fierce political reactions, with accusations flying between the BJP and Congress. Congress leader and Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain accused the BJP of attempting to create a climate of violence ahead of the elections. Hussain claimed that BJP leaders, including Suresh Borah, were responsible for instigating the shooting. “BJP members, known for criminal activity, reportedly fired the shots after approaching Ismail Hussain’s home,” he alleged. Hussain further pointed to reports that a person from Dhubri was allegedly brought to the area to incite the violence. He also raised concerns about the recent transfer of over 50 police officials, questioning the neutrality of law enforcement.Hussain also highlighted the destruction of property, including vandalized vehicles, and the detention of several young men from the minority community. He insisted that CCTV footage could provide critical evidence of those involved, emphasizing the need for an unbiased investigation. The growing political tension in Samaguri has amplified concerns over potential unrest in the lead-up to the by-elections. Both the BJP and Congress are accusing each other of stoking the violence for political gain, with the situation remaining volatile as authorities continue their investigation.
