The Rongmei Naga community in Manipur condemned the recent attack on a truck transporting onions along NH-37, declaring an immediate boycott of supplies to Kukis in Tamenglong and Noney Districts. The incident highlights ongoing tensions along the highway.

Guwahati: In a troubling incident on November 13, a truck loaded with onions was set on fire by miscreants on the Jiribam-Imphal section of National Highway 37. The attack has sparked strong condemnation from the Rongmei Naga community, which has now declared an immediate and total boycott of all supplies to the Kukis in Tamenglong and Noney Districts.

In a press statement, the Rongmei Naga community expressed outrage over the attack, describing it as not only an assault on the vehicles but also a direct threat to the entire population of the Naga districts. “This attack is a blatant act of aggression against the Rongmei people, within their own territorial jurisdiction,” the statement read.

The Rongmei Naga Students’ Organization (RNSOM) further condemned the assault, which involved two armed militants using automatic rifles to fire at the trucks before setting them ablaze. The trucks, which were transporting essential goods like rice, onions, and potatoes to the districts of Longmai, Noney, and Tamenglong, were targeted between 5:30 AM and 6:00 AM. This incident follows a similar attack at Kaimai, marking the second attack in recent months on vehicles traveling along NH-37.

The Rongmei community also took the opportunity to reiterate their previous appeals to the Jiribam Police for unrestricted passage of vehicles along the highway, stressing that the area falls under Rongmei jurisdiction. They acknowledged the support from the Manipur government, which has provided security convoys for vehicles carrying essential supplies, including petroleum.

The Rongmei Naga community has vowed to continue their protest and urged immediate action to prevent further violence and ensure the safety of those traveling along NH-37.
